Message from Mayor Laraine King

Greeneville is a municipality governed by a popularly elected Board of Mayor and Aldermen under the guidance and administration of the Mayor. It is the seat of Greene County in northeastern Tennessee, sitting in the Tennessee Valley in the heart of the southern Appalachian Mountains. The locale has a mild climate, with a mean annual temperature of 56.4 degrees and an average annual precipitation of 43 inches. Our population is estimated at 15,537 as recorded in the 2006 United States Census.

Our community is rich in history with the site of Tusculum College founded in 1794 and the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, containing two homes of the 17th president of the United States, Andrew Johnson and his gravesite. The birthplace of the famous pioneer, Davy Crockett, is nearby. Our town, settled in the 1780s, is named for the American Revolution general Nathanael Greene. Originally part of North Carolina, it served from 1785 to 1787 as the capitol of the short-lived State of Franklin, which failed to receive U.S. recognition as a separate state.

Greeneville exhibits an exciting pace of progress evident in the fields of sales, industry, agriculture, and education. Our school system is recognized for its excellence in academics, and continues to be ranked superior in its extra-curricular activities. Our soon-to-be revitalized downtown will be filled with shops, galleries, unique restaurants, and entertainment venues. The newly restored General Morgan Inn in downtown Greeneville contains a full service restaurant and amenities awaiting your stay. On the campus of Tusculum College one can find the Greeneville Astros, a minor league, rookie-level, baseball team in the Appalachian League. With the mountains and the Nolichuckey River meandering through the county, there are many more wonderful recreational opportunities.

I invite you to come and stay. Experience a community given to traditional values and personal achievement. We love visitors and we welcome you to our neighborhood.

Sincerely,
Laraine King
